The Coca Plantations

In the mountains of southwestern Colombia, farmers and entire families grow coca as their only economic outlet in the face of state neglect. Known as "San Coca," these plantations reflect a complex reality where coca replaces failed crops and feeds entire communities. Although the government fights drug trafficking, it often fails to distinguish between growers and criminals, leaving thousands trapped between need and conflict.

THE APACH SOLUTION

Association of Agricultural Producers of Chontaduro

APACH is a productive and community organization founded in 2009 in El Tambo, Cauca, made up primarily of women, farmers, Afro-Colombian and Indigenous communities, and victims of the conflict. From the Andean slopes of southwestern Colombia, they transform the chontaduro fruit grown on their farms into a sustainable alternative to illicit crops. They promote a solidarity economy based on equity, respect for differences, and clean production. Through alliances with other organizations and their participation in the National Chontaduro Roundtable, they work for the recognition of this fruit as part of a productive chain that promotes rural development with social justice.

Chontaduro instead of Coca

Importex Inc. (USA) and APACH-Colombia have joined forces to market chontaduro products under the brand “Chontadooroh Republic™” , promoting fair trade, sustainability, and the substitution of illicit crops in communities in Cauca.

Thanks to the support of organizations such as USAID, Mercy Corps, and the WFP, APACH has developed high-quality products for export. The first to hit the market is powdered chontaduro , available in resealable forms. Syrups, snacks, and jams, all 100% natural and allergen-free, will soon be added.
